Songwriting Article in Wall Street Journal

Wall Street Journal printed an interesting read in Friday August 13 edition of Arts & Entertainment section. Article “The Secrets of Songwriters” by John Jurgensen provided accounts of well-known songs and songwriters. Two things that rang out:
 1. It only takes one song to change your life: This statement I have heard before from artist / songwriter Sean Garrett as his own personal testimony and ironically John Jurgensen exposes the beginnings of songwriter Tom Douglas – a fascinating story. You might recognize the magnificent song “The House That Built Me” as one of Mr. Douglas’s number one chart toppers.
2. Demo version vs. Artist version & Male vs. Female vocalist: The article has both versions (demo & artist) posted for listening. After listening to both versions, the demo version of the male vocalist exemplifies ownership of the song. Emotions reciprocated throughout the entire song and it appeared not rushed. The final thought was perhaps it was just a personal preference of the performace of the song, but decided to preview the comments section of the article –  lo and behold! – a commenter mentions the same thoughts about the demo. What do you think? Preview the article at the link below.
